Arched Cabinet Marketplace Makeover
This (new to me) arched cabinet makeover was such a fun project and I am so excited to share the process!!
I found this cabinet on Facebook marketplace after searching for months and have spent the last few weeks working on bringing my designer inspired vision to life without the large price tag ( $2,700 to be exact) Though it has since doubled in price!! I will be sharing my total cost breakdown at the end.
First I started by removing the back mirror paneling, glass shelves, and the glass front and sides inserts. Popping the trim off from around the glass front and sides was actually really easy!
Next up, I sanded down the inside and out using an orbital hand sander and sanding sponges for the curves/intricate areas. I started with 80 grit sandpaper and progressed to 220. I wiped down the cabinet using a damp cloth and then prepped the cabinet using white interior primer paint.
Choosing the color was the most difficult part since I have seen the beloved tricorn black everywhere I was really tempted to use that, but decided to go with Sherwin Williams black magic with a satin finish instead since it had some grey undertones which matches our home better and I loveeee how it turned out!
I custom ordered these white oak shelves from Home Depot to the exact measurements of the previous glass shelving and picked up this white bead board for the back of the cabinet (where the mirror was).
DIY tip: Home Depot and Lowe’s will custom cut your wood projects in store for free!
Now to piece the cabinet all back together.. I traced the mirror backing to the bead board and used a jigsaw to trim the 4x8 ft back panel arched top and attached it with the screws that came with the cabinet.
Lastly, I detached the wooden base panel tapping out the nails in the opposite direction with a rubber mallet and replaced it with these 6 inch modern metal curved feet. These added a much more modern flare and a few more inches in height to the cabinet!
I couldn’t wait to style the cabinet but still do have one final step which will be to add edge banding to the front and sides of the white oak plywood shelving to cover the layers shown. I will be using this edge banding and it easily glues on!
My biggest advice to finding your own cabinet to DIY is to be patient! It took about 6 months for this one to make it to my feed. Saving the keyword searches for “arched cabinet” “arched curio” “Philip Reinisch curio” helps tell Facebook you want to see posts related to those searches!
Price: I purchased this cabinet for $80 on marketplace and the overall cost for the materials used (not including tools) was $236.00!!! I cant wait to style this seasonally and it is the perfect statement piece in our dining room.
Please tag/send me your cabinet makeovers!!
If you don’t want to wait for a marketplace find and would rather purchase an already completed arched cabinet, this Urban Outfitters Mason cabinet is a great affordable piece compared to the others on the market!
