Backyard Inspiration: Modern Coastal Farmhouse

Y’alI, I have been deep diving on Pinterest, Houzz, and Instagram lately looking for allll of the outdoor inspiration for our new backyard space!

We recently narrowed down the layout and materials of the hardscapes with our contractor’s help and expertise. There are 3 main things to consider when planning the layout of your backyard: Budget, Functionality & Aesthetic.

  1. How big will each area be?

  2. How much do you want to spend on each area?

  3. What materials do you need?

  4. Does the layout flow with your intended use?

  5. Will each area look cohesive next to each other?

Since we sit on a little over an acre of land, there is a lot of ground to cover which is why we will be tackling this in phases. Not doing everything all at once allows us to budget for the different spaces that we want, while using the initial spaces to determine how everything functions and flows together and what works best for our lifestyle.

The first phase will include a hardscaped gray brick herringbone style patio that will extend over to a modern diamond patterned turf and paver patio. There will be a few feet of space left around the foundation for plantings and flower beds.

I have been working with Gary from Paver Turf for the extended diamond patio to solidify the material choices and final measurements. Below are some photos of the turf and stone samples I received. We are so impressed with the quality and the 10 year turf warranty!

Paver Turf is made in the USA using renewable and recyclable components including plant based backing technology, replacing a large portion of the petroleum-based polymers. The turf fibers have Antimicrobial, IR Reflective, & Anti-Static Technology making it a clean and safe turf. Not to mention their weed blocker custom printed templates are insanely genius!

The second phase will be a built-in BBQ island that we will be tackling ourselves. I have always dreamt of having an outdoor kitchen and the flexibility to make it our own is exciting! I have not quite decided if we will go the pressure treated wood frame route or the cinderblock base route based on the cold temps of the winter months in New England. I do know that we want a modern white brick/gray concrete design similar to the ones below which will ultimately help decide our best building route.

For the third phase I would like to focus on entertainment areas such as a firepit hangout and a putting green. My husband loves to golf and this is something our friends and family can enjoy while visiting as well! Paver Turf offers a pre-cut putting green or a custom option that I can’t wait to explore! Using the same company will ensure the turf colors and quality match along with the warranty security.

The fourth phase TBD- will be the biggest project of all- the pool. I would love to do something rectangular in shape, with clean and simple lines. (This will be much further down the line but a gal can put her dreams on paper for now!)

We are so excited to get phase one started and enjoy our backyard this summer. We are hoping phase one will be done by June to lead us right into summer.. Stay tuned!!
